ALL THINGS GLEE

Glee Co-Creator & Cast Talk Original Music and Gay Kiss

This week’s episode of Glee featured original songs for the first time in the show's history, a decision that series co-creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy says was made simply to “try something” the show hasn’t done. During a panel discussion of the Fox series Wednesday, March 16th, at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills, Murphy said they never knew if the idea would work -- they just wanted to try it, adding, “half the time you win and half the time you lose.”  Glee star Cory Monteith, who plays Finn and also attended the Paley Center event, said it was exciting to do an original song and he’s pumped about the prospect of doing more in the future.

This week’s episode also featured the first kiss between the show’s two major gay characters, Kurt and Blaine, played by Chris Colfer and Darren Criss, respectively.  Murphy says it was important for him to make sure Kurt got a happy ending and had a “moment of joy,” particularly after the recent bullying storyline.

Jane Lynch, who won an Emmy this year for her portrayal of trash-talking cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester, also attended the event.  She said real teachers love her character and are always telling her they wish they could say to their students the things she says on the show.
