ALL THINGS GLEE

Matt Morrison Releases Debut Single, but Says He Can't Compete with Glee

Glee star Matt Morrison is competing against himself on the chart this week.  His debut single, "Summer Rain," just hit iTunes on Tuesday, March 8th, but so did a bunch of songs from Tuesday night's episode of Glee.  Matt says at this point, he knows that his solo stuff probably won't sell as well as the Glee songs, but he's OK with that.  He tells us, "I don't think I could ever compete with the Glee stuff.  I mean, maybe down the line, but this is my first time at it. I'm not looking to compete with them at all."

"Summer Rain" -- which is about doing the wild thing during a summer shower -- is based on something that actually happened to Matt some years ago.  Still, he says the jaunty single isn't typical of what his upcoming solo album sounds like.  He says "The album's kind of eclectic, and I think it goes a lot deeper than 'Summer Rain.'  I felt like for our first song to come out...it had to be light and kind of fun."  Why?  He explains, "If you start with a 'deeper' song, it's kinda hard to then go to a funy, poppy song."

There's no firm release date yet for Matt's debut album, which is set to come out May.  In addition to a duet with Elton John, Matt tells us there's also a song that directly addresses the role he plays on Glee.  He tells us, "I have this song called 'My Name," which is about the duality of me and Mr. Schuester, and how people kind of think I am him, in a way."

Tuesday night's Glee episode ended with Mr. Schue and Gwyneth Paltrow's Holly Holliday hooking up, but Matt tells us he doesn't think the couple has a future.  He explains, "She's a little too gallivant-y [for Will]....She's such a free spirit, and I don't think she could be tied down."  As for a guest starring role in the show from his duet partner, Elton John, Matt says, "Right now, it's just something people are saying...[but] it's very possible."  He notes that Elton recently had dinner with Glee creator Ryan Murphy, so stay tuned.
