Elton John & Ricky Martin Star In New Anti Gay Hate Crime PSA
In the wake of the suicide of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi, who took his own life after classmates posted video online of him being intimate with another man, a new star-studded public service announcement has been released decrying hate crimes based on sexual orientation.
Elton John and Ricky Martin both appear in the clip, which talks about the need to end these acts of violence and intimidation. Elton says, "Whenever I hear about a hate crime, I am shocked and saddened." Ricky adds that hate crimes occur "approximately every hour of every day in this country."
The PSA is part of the Give a Damn Campaign, an offshoot of Cyndi Lauper's True Colors Fund. Cyndi says in a statement, "We, as parents, as people, as a nation need to stand up and say enough is enough. We will not tolerate hate any longer." Other stars who appear in the PSA include Wanda Sykes, Glee star Idina Menzel, and actress and comedienne Rachel Harris.
